LABOR MARKET

The Labor climate in Cambria County is changing, as is the industrial base. Excellent work ethics, high productivity, and competitive labor rates have all added to the past success of business and industry in the area. Today, as never before, there is a p ositive and cooperative relationship that exists between labor and management. Cambria County, as well as Pennsylvania in general, knows and understands the importance of cooperation between labor and management. The Commonwealth has strived to reverse th e tough labor climate that once existed because of the numerous conflicts within the steel and coal industries.

Evidence that the change in labor-management relations is working can be substantiated statewide. The number of workers involved in labor disputes over a recent 10-year period has declined by more the 75%.

Unlike many areas in the northeast, Cambria County enjoys a labor surplus. This availability of both skilled and semi-skilled workers is a tremendous advantage over many areas in terms of attracting new business and industry. Labor rates are competitive. Many companies have found that wage rates in Cambria County, for both manufacturing and non-manufacturing jobs, are far below the national average.
